Lesson Plan, Recording and Predicting Weather
Grade 4, However. this lesson could apply to many grade levels
Length, 3 or 4 weeks
Prior Knowledge, Students will build on their understanding of temperature, wind speed, precipitation, and cloud types.
Objectives: Students will use tools to observe and record current weather conditions to create charts, graphs, and video of current weather conditions in their area.
Students will use created charts, graphs, and video to create a 5 day prediction of future weather.
Students will write a weather forecast.
State Standards: Science, ESS1 The Earth and Earth materials, as we know them today have developed over long periods of time, through constant change, 1. Atmosphere, Climate and Weather. And 5 Processes and Rates of Change
ESS4 The growth of scientific knowledge in Earth Space Science has been advanced through the development os technology and is used alone or in combination with other sciences to identify, understand and solve local and global issues. 2 Tools, 3 Local and Global Environmental issues, alone or in combination with other sciences to identify, understand and solve local and global issues. 2 Tools, 3 Local and Global Environmental issues, 4 Careers and Technical Education
Writing W. IW.4.1.1 Informational Writing, Grouping ideas logically, predictable categories, steps of a procedure, reasons or arguments. W.W.4.14 Writing a conclusion
Supplies: thermometers, weathervane, anemometer, rain gauge, and flip camera.
Procedures: 1. Students will record the following for several weeks: temperature, wind speed, wind direction, cloud types, and precipitation.
2. Students will video the same area each day as they take their recordings
3. Students will chart and graph results of recording
4. Students will analyze video for changes in weather patterns
5. Students will use these recording and videos to predict weather for the next 5 days.
6. Students will write a news cast to be recorded. Students will use their previously recording of weather conditions in their news cast as background.
7. Students will play their weather newscast on the local cable channel.
Evaluation: Using a rubric, Students will be scored 1-5 on the following
Graphs and Charts for each of the following: Wind Speed, Temperature, Cloud Types, Wind Direction, and Precipitation. Graphs will be score for neatness, accuracy, and spelling.
Written weather report for 5 days, scored for spelling and predictions based on graph and chart reports.
Presentation of weather report on video.

Using flip camera will allow my students to see and understand nature in a different way. They will understand changes as they are happening.
