Objectives: Students will:
1. Develop skill in reading standard format recipes and identify guidelines for following a recipe.
2. Complete a lab plan with a time schedule to follow for the class period.
3. Follow safety and sanitation procedures.
4. Work cooperatively with team members to produce a video recording of their knowledge of accurate measuring and food preparation techniques.
5. Evaluate their work in each of the following areas: Accuracy – followed recipe correctly; Cooperation – helped each other; Safety and Sanitation – followed established criteria for working in foods lab; Finished product – recipe turned out well
Day #1 – Students determine their roles in the production of their cooking show which includes Head Cook, Assistant Cook, Set Designer and Videographer. Each group member will practice using the Flip camera to record measuring and mixing in their kitchen area. This is a dress rehearsal. (Communication and Collaboration; Technology Operations and Concepts)
Day #2 - Students use Inspiration software to record the planning of the Giant Chocolate Chip Cookie. This includes dividing the tasks for the Head Cook, Assistant Cook, Dish Washer and Kitchen Manager, as well as completing a time schedule to follow. (Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making; Technology Operations and Concepts)
Day #3 – Students use the Flip camera to record their cooking show by narrating each step of measuring and combining the ingredients for the chosen recipe. (Technology Operations and Concepts; Creativity and Innovation; Communication and Collaboration)
Day #4 – Students will view clips, edit, and create a movie using the Flip software. (Creativity and Innovation; Technology Operations and Concepts) The videos will be viewed on the class web page (Edline.net) to evaluate their work and determine areas to make improvements for the next cooking lab.

Special Education accommodation: Students with special needs/ESL are placed in a cooperative learning group to provide peer support.

Materials needed: Flip cameras and software; Inspiration software; tripods; 10 computers in the classroom; cooking supplies

Work with the math teacher during the measuring and fractions unit of study.
Follow-Up
Students vote for the best video to be posted on the school’s FaceBook page, then invite the parents and community to make positive comments. (Digital Citizenship)
