The activity will begin with an interactive whiteboard lesson introducing the current part of speech we are working on. The lesson will include a brief review of the part of speech as well as a chance for students to use their “clickers” to answer questions pertaining to the part of speech.

At the conclusion of the whiteboard lesson small groups of students will make a list of words that they think fit the current part of speech. Then they will look those words up in a dictionary to confirm what type of word it is.

To prepare the students for the final portion of the activity, I will show a brief video of The Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, in action so they can get some ideas for their own videos.

After viewing the video the class will be split into small groups to begin working on their videos.

The first thing they will do is decide on five to eight words to use during their two to three minute video. They can be the same words from the previous list they had or they can think of different words to use. When they have completed their list and verified that each word fits in the particular part of speech category they are working on they will begin deciding how they are going to set up their “hunt.” To do this the group will sketch out a plan on a storyboard showing how they are going to shoot the scene and where the scene is going to take place.

Once they have made decisions on when and how they are going to video each scene they will create the script and assign parts to each person in the group. Each person in the group will need to play the role of the Part of Speech Hunter at least one time, run the Flip Video Camera at least one time, and be involved in acting out a part of speech at least one time.

After video recording has been done students will add titles and credits using video editing software.

To conclude the activity students will share their videos with the class and then upload the videos to our class’s YouTube page.
Comments
This activity actively engages students and requires them to work on numerous skills that will benefit them in the 21st Century. Students will need to work as a team in small groups to create a script and video. They will also need to communicate verbally with their partners and their audience as well as communicate by writing a script using correct grammar.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
For math this activity could be done during a geometry unit and students could "hunt" for different 2D and 3D shapes.
Follow-Up
This project can be done multiple times throughout the school year to learn about all the different parts of speech.
