School: Mize Elementary School, Lenexa, KS
Planned By: Susan Holloway
Original Author: Susan Holloway, Lenexa
First, students will be placed in small groups and will be allowed to practice making words using letter-sound gestures such as: /j/ juggle, short /a/ open and close arms, /m/ two hands mixing to represent the word jam. Spelling words can be placed in three gift bags for students to take turns pulling out a word and acting it out. (Our district has a certain list of these letter-sound gestures.)Next, have children video tape each other using the flip cameras as they take turns and act out 4 or 5 words from the bag at a time. Once the word has been acted out, the student may show the word card or another student from the group may show it as well as say it. After filming, students can immediately play it back to check for accuracy or show the teacher. If completed correctly, the camera can then be plugged into a laptop for individual or small group practice. Using the teacher’s computer, it could be projected for whole class use and combined with Qwizdom Interact remotes to make it into a game or quiz.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Students can use the flip cameras to gesture out words from any of the core curriculum subjects. For example: math words – add, subtract, plus, minus, set, cube, sphere, cone, etc; science words – animals, types of weather, plant parts, etc; social studies words – maps, family, rules, rights, jobs, wants and needs.
Follow-Up
Videos can be shared with other first grade classes for them to practice letter-sound relationships too. The flip cameras can also be used to extend the activity to acting out words and sentences to relate to represent parts of speech and correct grammar. A mini gesture dictionary could be created by putting several of clips into a file for students to access on the laptops.
