The Daily 5 was developed and based on the daily habits of reading, writing, and working independently in order to build literacy skills. The Daily Five, which are comprised of: Read to Self, Work on Writing, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, and Word Work. Each is introduced at different times with a lot of modeling from the teacher and practice with the class as we build our stamina and learn the behaviors of the Daily Five. As to increase engagement and ownership students will video tape themselves and partners modeling the correct way to read to self and the students will learn what to do and not to do during Daily 5. Throughout the introductions of reading to self, reading with a partner, writing, word work, and listening to reading, students will video what it should look like when you are reading to self and what it shouldn’t look like in the classroom. Students will do this for each of the Daily 5 rotations. The students will watch the videos as a whole class and discuss why it was correct and what the students should be doing. It would also serve as a review throughout the rest of the school year. As some word work and other various activities are completed, the flip camera will be used to record their progress and completion of activities and as an alternative way to assess. Part of the Daily 5 is partner reading and during partner reading students are given cards to practice questioning as reading is taking place. Students can record the readings and the teacher can assess that the questioning is taking place and as a way to monitor their fluency.
