School: Hiram High School, Hiram, GA
Planned By: Sandra Mitchell
Original Author: Sandra Mitchell, Hiram
A large scale activity will be created to mimic the television show "The Amazing Race". Students will travel to different geometry math task stations located around the school and manned by teachers. Students will use digital cameras and power point design to document their progress made during the race. Students will race for points for time to complete the tasks overall and for accuracy of completion of the tasks at each station. Students will compete for prizes and receive grading for the project.

This project will help to strengthen the Geometry Strand that has been deemed an area of weakness in coming from the middle school environment.

Task Stations will each adopt a country from around the world to display and use real world pictures and items found in each country to complete math tasks written by teachers and using the materials found at each station.

Students will document their work and thinking to justify their "Geometry Amazing Race".

Students will...
1) Investigate properties of geometric figures in the coordinate plane
2) Understand and use the language of mathematical argument and justification
3) Discover, prove, and apply properties of triangles, quadrilaterals, and other polygons.

If proven successful the project will be replicated at the middle school level to effect rising 8th grade students and to strengthen their learning with geometry.
Comments
Students will use digital cameras, scientific calculators, printers, flash drives, and power point software to document their travels during "The Geometry Amazing Race".
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
The Science department will be involved to elicit their teacher manpower and to discuss how to integrate science into the geometry subject area.
Follow-Up
Student project presentations will be judged and then shared with other students at the high school and middle school levels.
