Separate into teams. Assign each team different areas of the school to measure. Using the information, the teams will input the data into a spreadsheet.

The students will compile perimeter and area for the school.

Using the information, the students will use Tool Factory Math Draw and the Resources Bank to create a scale project the represents the school. The clip art can be used to represent each classroom or other area (example: Cafeteria, Computer Lab, etc.)

After the scale is created using Tool Factory, we will take the information and our scale to art class. In art class, the students will learn how to draw a scale by hand.


Lesson Objectives
• to define and explain the concept of area and perimeter;
• to show the relation between the area of a figure and its length and width;
• to show the relation between the perimeter of a figure and its length and width.

Perimeter and area are two different terms that help us know how big or small an object is. The perimeter of an object is the sum of the length of all of the sides. In other words, the perimeter of an object equals the length of its sides plus the width of its sides.

One key part of every scale drawing is the scaling factor. This number represents the degree to which your scale drawing or scale model has been reduced in size when compared to the original. Maintaining as constant a scaling factor throughout their sketches will be one of the most difficult parts of the activity for the students. But it is something they should strive for as a uniform scaling factor will provide the most useful information and results.

• Students will be able to understand the challenges in technical drawing.
• Students will be able to create a set of 2-D scale drawing from a real object to represent its 3-D shape
