School: Horizon Cmty Middle School, Aurora, CO
Planned By: Celine Perea
Original Author: Celine Perea, Aurora
This is for our 8th grade computer animation class.

Students will be given a copy of our Positive Behavior Support (PBS) matrix which outlines the behavior expectations of Horizon Middle School. At Horizon we respect: Self, Others, Learning and the Environment. The matrix shows how to demonstrate respect in various locations throughout the building. For example: To demonstrate respect to self in the bathrooms, you should wash your hands. To demonstrate respect to others in the bathroom you should knock first and flush. Each student would be given one of those expectations and then be asked to create a 30-second public service announcement using stop animation to teach the expectation to the student body through the morning announcements . Students would be allowed to use any medium of their choosing: paper cutouts, everyday objects, photos of people, clay, etc...

Students would first be required to storyboard the PSA and provide notes that detail the type of background used and the shots needed. Students would use cameras provided by the teacher or are allowed to use their own cell phones or cameras. All editing, voice overs and addition of music and sound effects will be done through Windows Movie maker or Stop Motion Pro. This project will take three weeks from beginning to end.
Comments
We have done this lesson in the past using Apple Computers and iMovie. This is our first year as a PC school and would love to try Stop Motion Pro.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This lesson can be changed to teach any number of things to the student body: AVID Strategies, Test-taking skills, How to prevent Cyberbullying, Math concepts, etc...
Follow-Up
As a final projects students are allowed to create a 1-minute animation using all of the techniques learned in this class: traditional animation, morphing, stop animation and computer animation.
