Grade Level 9:

Objectives:
-Students will demonstrate their understanding of the grammar "parts of speech".
-Students will collaborate to design a visual storyboard of their visual interpretation of "The parts of speech" and their usage.
-Students will create a stop motion video interpretation of "the parts of speech".
-Students will present their stop motion videos to other students.

Prior Knowledge:
-Understanding of meaning and usage of grammar parts of speech
-Creating a storyboard.
-How to use the video editing software.

Day 1:
Objective(s): Students will demonstrate their understanding of the parts of speech.

Teacher will lead class in a review of the parts of speech and their meanings. Parts of speech: the verb, the noun, the pronoun, the adjective, the adverb, the preposition, the conjunction, and the interjection. The class will then be divided into groups. Each group will create a list of at least 3 examples of each part of speech and how they could be visually demonstrated. The student work will then be collected. The teacher will then lead a class discussion comparing the student’s ideas on examples and how they could be visually demonstrate the parts of speech. The students will be given a preview of the assignment for Day 2.

Homework: Students should start thinking about materials they could use to create a stop motion video showing the meaning of each part of speech and demonstrating usage.

Day 2:
Objective(s): Students will collaborate to design a visual storyboard of their grammar video.

Students will sit with their small groups. Groups will discuss their ideas for demonstrating meaning and usage of grammar parts of speech. Students will get teacher approval for their ideas before proceeding. Each group will be given a storyboard template. The students will collaborate and design a storyboard that follows their grammar video idea. (Teacher will notify students of time requirements. Students videos should not exceed 10 minutes in length due to class period time and number of groups.)

Homework: Teacher will provide markers, color pencils, paper, and clay. Students should collect and bring to class any addition materials they would like to use in their stop motion video production.

Days 3 and 4:

Objective(s): Students will create a stop motion video interpretation of “The parts of speech”.

Using their storyboard and Stop Motion Pro software students will collaboratively create their grammar stop motion videos. Students will be allowed to materials provided (markers, color pencils, paper, and clay), their own, or some combination. Some students my want to use action figures, dolls, or other objects.

Day 5:
Objective(s): Students will present their video to other students.

The class will have a “Parts of Speech Festival” and share their videos. School English Teachers, Foreign Language Teachers, and other school administration will be invited to the festival. The teacher will then post stop motion videos and class website. The teacher will also make a DVD of the stop motion videos for sharing with our elementary feeder schools to share with the elementary students.

Assessment:
(1) Day 1 - Group list of examples of each part of speech and how they could be visually demonstrated.
(2) Day 2 Group storyboard templates.
(3) Days 3,4,5 Stop motion video explaining and demonstrating usage of “The Parts of Speech”.
