Teacher: Erica Sands Subject: Art and Animation 1-2 Grade Levels: 9-12 Unit Title: Traditional to Digital Animation Lesson Title: Walking Stick Figure
Objectives:
1. Students will learn the fundamentals of 2 dimensional art; 1 and 2 point perspective, value, the human structure, facial features. 2. Students will apply their knowledge of 2D art and learn the art of character development through character model sheets 3. Students will learn and be quizzed on the 12 Principles of Animation, the history of Disney animators, Frank and Ollie. 4. Students will learn the 5 walking cycles and draw each keyframe for their final digital animation. 5. Students with transfer their 5 drawn keyframes to Flash CS3 or CS5 and complete a 50 second digital animation of a walking stick figure.
Materials needed:
1. Drawing packets for the fundamentals of 2D art 2. Character model sheets(questionnaire about their character, different body positioning and facial expressions 3. Powerpoint on 12 Principles of Animation 4. Video on Frank and Ollie 5. Videoguide and article of Frank and Ollie 6. 12 Principles Quiz 7. 5 walking cycle practice worksheet 8. 5 sheets of keyframe templates 9. Clipboards 10. Black pens 11. Computer instructions 12. Flash CS3 or CS5 13. iPhoto and Photo Booth (Using iPhoto and Photo Booth because we don't have scanners or camera equipment)
Anticipatory Set:
1. Students watch a sceen from the Nightmare Before Christmas to understand the use of human joints.
Purpose/Objective
1. Students after this lesson should have a clear knowledge of 2D art skills and how these skills apply to traditional animation. 2. Students after this lesson show have a clear knowledge on the history of Disney's animators, Frank and Ollie and the 12 Principles of Animation. 3. Students after this lesson should have clear knowledge of how to transfer traditional animation to digital animation. (Using iPhoto and Photo Booth because we don't have scanners or camera equipment) 4. Students should have a clear understanding of how to animate a walking stick figure in Flash CS3 or CS5.
Input:
1. Students need to understand the foundation of 2D art. Students will complete a drawing packet, covering essential foundation skills. 2. Students need to understand the 12 Principles of animation so they can apply them to their walking stick figures and future animations. Through Power Point, video and an article students will have the proper knowledge. 3. Students need to know the 5 walking cycles and how to transfer their drawings to the computer. Through worksheets on Photo Booth, iPhoto and Flash(we don't have scanners or camera equipment) students will understand how to transfer and complete a digital animation of their walking stick figures. 4. Students need to understand Flash, Photo Booth, iPhoto and the basics of animating in Flash. Students will have worksheets with through instructions on how to use all three programs.
Model:
1. Drawing in the packets with students 2. Lecturing with Power Point 3. Completed example of the 5 walking cycle 4. Walking students through the process of using iPhoto and Flash
Checking for Understanding:
1. Drawing packets 2. Quiz on 12 Principles of Animation 3. 5 keyframes 4. Completed animation of walking stick figure
Guided Practice:

1. Students' work will be projector on the screen for the class to critic. 2. Students will be ask to fill out a self critic of their final project.
Independent Practice:
1. Students study for quiz 2. Students need to come in on their free time to complete their assignment if it is not completed in class. |

We had to use Photo Booth and iPhoto to make this project work because my classrooms are not set up with scanner and mounted cameras like a typical animation classroom. I purchased clipboards so my students could have a flat and secure template to place their drawings while copying them into Photo Booth. |
Cross-Curriculum Ideas |
Science is a large component to animation. Students connect science and animation when we discuss the human figure and Leonardo Da Vinci. Students also make a connection when we discuss the 12 Principles of Animation which are considered science based principles applied to character development. |
Follow-Up |
Students later with apply animation to animals, graphic novels and a art contest through the LB Art Museum. |
