The students can work in groups of 2 - 4. Each student takes a turn both throwing the ball and timing the throw with a stop watch.
The students record their times on a chart.
The students plug the time into the formula for gravity and find the velocity at which they threw the ball in feet per second.
After finding the velocity of the throw the students will use the graphing calculator to explore when the ball reaches its maximum height.
The student will find the maximum height of the ball by substituting the height/2 into the gravity equation.
The student then finds the velocity and height of all the members of the group and compares the findings, drawing conclusions about the correlation in regards to time, velocity and maximum height.
The student uses the gravity fomula to solve for missing values of time when given the maximum height or velocity
Comments
This lesson/activity is a great introduction to quadratics and the quadratic equation
