Becoming Twits! TOPIC: Summarization SOL: 6.5 h Identify the main idea. 6.5i Identify and summarize supporting details. Bell Work: (7 minutes) Students will complete Daily Language Review (DLR7) and daily journal.  Review Bell Work: (5-10 minutes) I DO: Yesterday we discussed to methods for summarizing. Who can remind us of the two methods? (Fiction – SWBST, Non-Fiction, Subject Verb Complete Thought) Today we’re going to look at another way to summarize what you are reading. This method is known as the GIST. To get the gist of something we’re going to use “Tweet”. What is Twitter? (A social networking site. Instant Updates…. ) A “Tweet” is like e-mail, but you are limited to 140 or less characters.  Here are some examples of Tweets for Matilda 1. Matilda by Roald Dahl is a precocious and brilliant child who loves to read more than anything else. (100) 2. I can’t believe Ms.Trunchbull is so mean. She picked up a girl by her pigtails, lifted a boy by his ears. (106) 3. Her parents and the principal both hate her. But with Ms.Honey’s help, Matilda uses her special powers to make life better. (123) 4. Poor Nigel he had to stand in a corner on one foot. All because he knew the difference between right and write. (113) Who can come up with another tweet about Matilda?  Question – does spelling count? When writing tweets it’s ok to use “text talk” and abbreviate if it helps your summary. WE DO: Can you write your own Tweet about the characters from Matilda? Working with --- students, write a Tweet about Ms. Honey, Ms. Trunchbull, Matilda and Mr. Wormwood. When you complete your tweets stick them on the correct names so that we can share. (Approximately 10 minutes)  Share Tweets with class.  Congratulations, you are all twits!
