Essential Questions: What are the different categories of design software? What is a symbol library? How do professionals use design software? How do you produce a computer-aided design floor plan?
Key Vocabulary: architect scale, CADD, elevation views , symbol library
Review / Warm-up: Students are to review first nine-week home decorating project and write a paragraph describing how their project would have been easier if they were allowed to work on the computer.
Instructional Activities / Procedure: • Presentation of PowerPoint on CADD –based design software programs. • Watch video tutorial on Home Designer Suite 2014.
Assessments Formative: Students will use their homes they designed and decorated in the first nine weeks to create a fully-decorated 3-D virtual model using the Home Designer Suite 2014 program. Upon completion, students will present design plans to class for review.
Technology Strategies: PowerPoint via LCD and laptop, video tutorial on Home Designer Suite 2014, activity using Home Designer Suite 2014
Literacy Strategies: Warm-up writing activity;student notes outline for PowerPoint and video tutorial; student presentations.
ESL/ELD Strategies: Have ESL teacher translate key vocabulary words to have on hand for students if they are having trouble, Home Designer Suite 2014 is very pictorial and user friendly for multiple languages.
EC Strategies: All directions will be read out loud to ensure all students understand directions. Students will be given an outline to assist in taking notes during PowerPoint and video tutorial. Teacher will be available to circulate and assist as needed while students are completing 3-D project.
AIG/Accelerated Strategies: Students will be given the opportunity to learn how to import other materials not included in the program to increase interest.
Lesson Reflection: Need to have back-up activity available in the case of technical issues with computers. |

Cross-Curriculum Ideas |
Interior Design II students could use the information created to create a presentation to show both Carpentry and Drafting students. The presentation could focus on how each of these classes are interrelated. |
Follow-Up |
Now that students are capable of using a computer-based design program, they can now use this program to do a landscaping project that will be implemented at the school. |
