Follow a unit on invasive species and the biotic flora of the area, a follow-up outdoor classroom day will be planned.
Standards: (insert your local and/or national standards)
Material: 20 GPS units (1 unit per pair of students) Identification chart multiple zip-lock baggies utility scissors notebook
Activity: Students will be seperated into pairs, each pair will be given a direction in which to travel and given destination they should get to. As the students are traveling to their destinations, they will be observing the flora and noting the location of any invasive species via waypoints on their GPS instruments as well as in their notebook. Upon reaching the destination the students will consume a light snack and some water, then continue to their final destination. Students will be criss-crossing the wetlands in hopes of locating the vast majority of invasive species in the area. Upon the completion of the activity, the students information will be confirmed via the leaf samples they had collected. A final presentation to the wetlands manager will be compiled along with a list of student volunteers that are willing to return to help terminate the invasive species.
Notes: Pre-arrange the trip with the refuge, some state run refuges will allow you to remove the invasive plants as you identify them.
