STEMing Mobile Devices
Objectives: Able to utilize technology to collect data. Analyze data found in tables, charts, and graphs, to formulate conclusions. Explain how models can be used to illustrate scientific principles. Describe the relationship between form and function. Provide testable hypothesis for simple investigation. Maintain clear and accurate records of scientific investigations. Describe the relationship between kinetic and potential energy in basic transformation.
Materials: (8) 2/group Cell Phones, Data/Text Plan, (8) 2/group Toy Cars, Stopwatch, Warm Climate, 5 Netbooks, Microsoft Office with Xcel, Geographical Positioning System, 4 Geographical Locations, 4 meter sticks.
Procedure: 1. Select 4 different geographical locations for each group of students to find (can be on the playground or even larger distances). 2. Students gather all materials needed per group. 3. Each group is assigned a coordinate to start at. 4. Upon arriving at the designated coordinate using the GPS. 5. Students provide a testable hypothesis statement on whether the terrain affect speed and velocity. 6. The students must describe the location, terrain, and collect a photograph of themselves or a group member in front of the site and send it to the instructor. 7. After completing step 4 they should record the speed and velocity of both of their toy cars using their cell phone stopwatch or hand held stopwatch and a meter stick. 8. Record each car 3 times. 9. Plot this data within Xcel on the Netbook. 10. Once data is within the Xcel spreadsheet the students’ text their location in coordinate form to the teacher and once given the go ahead from a text from the teacher she will give them the next coordinate. 11. The students will then proceed to that coordinate and repeat step 4-8. 12. After all groups have completed all coordinated locations the instructor will send a “STOP” text to all groups and a coordinate to meet up at. 13. Once together the groups will use their data in Xcel to complete a graph displaying their information in a different for to compare their results. 14. Then, using the graph they must write text their analysis and conclusion to the instructor. |

Math and graphing along with Language Arts and Writing during conclusions and analyzation paragraphs. |
Follow-Up |
Discussion of results and group graphs will be combined to produce the entire classes results. Other activities could include statistical analysis, various lab testing with the use of the netbooks, and environmental projects with the use of the global positioning systems and netbooks. |
