Fluency with iTalk Page Views: 1962
|
Introduction: Reading fluently is an integral part of being a successful reader, that helps students bridge the gap between decoding and comprehending. Teacher will model reading texts with different levels of fluency. Students will turn and talk about what they heard and which reading sounded the best and why.
1. Discuss the importance of reading fluently. Explain that fluent reading includes reading with a good rate, accuracy, and expression. Model each component. 2. Explain that students will have the opportunity to practice fluent reading over time. They will use a program called iTalk to record themselves some of the books they are reading. 3. Show the iTalk program and model what students will do when they use it. Explain that once a week during Reader's Workshop they will use the iPad to record themselves reading. 4. Students will use the current book they are reading. 5. They will record themselves reading their book for 2-5 minutes. 6. They will use listen to their recording and think about 2 questions: -What do you like? -What do you need to change? 7. They will then record the same section again making the changes they thought about. 8. Students will listen to the recording again thinking about the same questions again. 9. Students will record the same section one last time making final changes. 10. Students will keep their best reading and save it under their name and date. Their previous recordings can be deleted. |

Cross-Curriculum Ideas |
Having iPads for students to use would be beneficial in many subjects. For example, in math rotations, I have used an iPad to record lessons on Show Me. That way students can have a "digital teacher" when they are not physically in a small group with me. |
Follow-Up |
We will monitor fluency data to document the successfulness of this venture. Students digital recordings could be uploaded to digital portfolios or shared with parents during conferences. |
