VISION
1) What is your vision for teaching this lesson? How do you see technology being used to help you meet this vision?
I would like students to understand cell organelle functions and how they work together to function as a whole.
Technology will be used through video, formative assessment, notes, diagrams, simulations, and creating a cumulative assessment.

2) What are your standards this lesson will address?
2.02 Investigate and describe the structure and functions of cells including:
• Cell organelles.
• Cell specialization.
• Communication among cells within an organism.
3) How long do you plan for this lesson to take?
The total unit on cell organelles and functions will take about 3 days.

Background Information for Lesson
Subject Biology
Lesson Topic Cells
Standards Addressed 2.02 (cell organelles) New Ess. Standards Bio 1.1.1 and 1.1.2
Essential Question(s) How do the differing structures of cells relate to specialized functions?

Goals and Objectives The students will be able to…
*distinguish between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
*state major findings of cell theory
*recognize cell parts and give their functions
*compare & contrast plant and animal cells
Lesson Length 3 days

Prior Knowledge Incorporated
Students studied cells in prior grades

Identify all non-technology materials to be used.
Include the strengths/restrictions of each tool/resource. Worksheets/colorings/foldable of cell organelles
Plant/animal cell lab – compare onion & cheek cells

Identify all digital tools and online resources to be used. Include the strengths/restrictions of each tool/resource.
Discovery education video on discovery of the cell theory.
Cellsalive.com
Wall wisher
Cellcraft game
www.scrapblog.com
google docs formative assessments
todaysmeet.com for brainstorming

Explain what deliverables will be created in this lesson by the students. Include when it will be created and how it will be assessed.
Plant/animal cell lab
Students can choose an option from scrapblog.com (calendar, storybook, etc.) as their final project on cell organelles.
Assessed with a rubric.

Introduction Day 1
PBS video on discovery of the cell theory

Activity 1
Todaysmeet.com – Reflecting on the video, what do you think life was like in the 1800’s?
Name some things that would have been useful for scientists to have back then.

Activity 2
Show images of a prokaryotic and a eukaryotic cell. Brainstorm differences & similarities in a blog.

Activity 3
Analogy – Name all the “jobs” within a school (brainstorm activity with todays meet or some other :chat:). Now, imagine if I had to do all those jobs you just named… IMPOSSIBLE! Leads into organelles & functions.

Activity 4 Students will color each organelle and take notes on functions.
Closure (Include homework and other next steps) Discussion on how the whole (school) would suffer from the disfunction of one part (i.e. custodian) and then do the same with the cell. Homework – matching cell parts with functions/names. (google doc)

Introduction Day 2 Review homework

Activity 1 Have directions for students to put on wallwisher one organelle and its function.

Activity 2 Pictures of plant/animal cells – brainstorm similarities and differences. Proceed to plant and animal cell lab. Post collaborative results on wiki.

Activity 3 Assign project for assessment – create own analogy of cell organelles (cannot use school). Can use scrapblog.com to create a scrapbook or a calendar. Pairs. Go over rubric for grading.

Closure/HW Questions on assignment? Must come in with general plan for project tomorrow and have a couple of pages done.

Introduction Day 3 Active Expressions FA

Activity 1 Give students class time to work on project. Upload post to wiki or provide link

Activity 2 Students present project for me to grade and for students to give their reflections on each others.

Extra time/HW Students can play the game cell craft or do activities on cellsalive.com
