Objectives: At the end of this lesson, students will be able to...
 1. Correctly identify 6 place values in front of the decimal point and 2 place values after the decimal point
. 2. Create and synthesize a numerical representation from a written description of a number
. 3. Use a numerical representation of a worded description to calculate addition and subtraction of decimal numbers.
DOK: Level 4 (Create/Synthesize)
Resources/Materials: iPads, Smart Board, Math Notebooks
Warm up (Bell Ringer): Write in words all the multiples of 10's that you know
Anticipatory Set: Class Discussion – Is there really a that much of a difference between a million and a billion dollars?
Input/Modeling Procedures: Before the lesson starts
 1. Teacher will pull up the Nearpod presentation on the Smart Board
 2. Students will log into their Nearpod class account via the iPads and be ready to begin 3. Teacher will take over the Ipad screens via her iPad and begin the lesson presentation
 Input of Topic
 4. Teacher will go over the definition of place value while students are taking notes in math notebooks. Then the teacher will present to the students the 6 place values in front of the decimal point.
 5. The Nearpod presentation will continue in giving each student an example of the decimal place with numbers. 
 6. Students will be asked to write with their finger on the iPad what each place value means in terms of individual value.
 7. Teacher will receive the responses from the student iPads and check the understanding of each student individually. If all are ready, the lesson will continue.
 8. Teacher will begin giving students word representations of simple numbers and expand to 4 place value numbers. Students will continually send responses via iPad to the teacher's iPad system.
 9. Students will be given a 4 place value number description and will write it on their iPad numerically.
 10. The Nearpod presentation will continue by presenting to the students the two decimal places to the right of the decimal point. Also included here will be examples of these decimals in terms of coins (10 cent dimes, 1 cent pennies)
 11. Teacher will relate visual representations of coins to explain decimal values.
 12. Students will be asked to write with their finger on the iPad what each place value means in terms of individual value.
 13. Teacher will continue giving students word representations examples and ask the students to respond numerically.
 14. Students will be given a 6 place value number description and will write it on their iPad numerically to be checked by the teacher via iPad. 
 15. Teacher will then give the students a few simple word problems representing addition and subtraction of decimal numbers.
 16. Students will be given a 6 place value subtraction word problem in which they will need to make a numerical value and synthesize this new number into answering a subtraction problem on iPad.

 Check for Understanding: 1. Students will do an initial proof of understanding by writing with their finger in the iPad what each place value means in terms of individual value. This will immediately be sent to the teacher's Ipad to check.
 2. Students will be given a 4 place value number description and will write it on their iPad numerically to be checked by the teacher.
 3. Students will write the numerical value for a 6 place value word description on their iPad.
 4. Students will make a numerical value out of a 6 place value word description and then synthesize this new number into answering a subtraction problem on iPad.
Guided Practice: Completion of various problems on iPad driven Smart Board by teacher and students. Problems will range from simple subtraction/addition → subtraction/addition of 6 place value word description problems.
Independent Practice: Students will complete five, 6 place value word description subtraction/addition problems which they will immediately send to the teacher via their Nearpod iPad connection. 
Enrichment: Students who get done early will be posed with 3 more questions with 1 place value more on each side of the decimal point. It will be their job to make the connection to the value and calculate the correct response.
Modification: Students will complete 2, 6 place value word description subtraction/addition problems in their independent practice.
Homework: Students will be asked to create three, 6 place value numbers which they will describe in words. They will then be asked to create 2 word problems: one describing the subtraction of 2 of the numbers, and another describing the addition of 2 of the numbers.
Closure: Turn to your partner and test them to see if they know all 6 place values
