Reading Stations Plan for Reading Days

3-4 students per group

Station 1: Independent reading

Students read silently on their own. Every 15 minutes they pause to discuss what they have read so far in the chapter, and record this on a post it note to be placed in their book. An electronic timer will be provided at this station so that students will know when to stop and chat.

Station 2: Audio book

Students will listen to the audio book version of the novel while following along in their book. Students will listen through an Ipod/ipad with the audio book on it. A headphone splitter with 5 headphone jacks will be used so that multiple students can listen at once on one device. Every 3 pages, the group will pause the audio book, to discuss and record something interesting that a character said or did in those three pages. This will be written on a post-it note and placed in their copy of the novel.

Station 3: Ebook

At this station, students will read the ebook version on the novel. This will allow them to instantly look up definitions to words that they do not know, and connect them to the internet to look up ideas/things/concepts that they are confused about. At this station, each student should record at least two words or ideas that they looked up on a record sheet that they will keep.

Station 4: Reading Aloud

This group will take turns reading out loud to each other and recording their reaching to help with fluency. Each person will read 3 pages aloud until they finish that chapter. If it is not a student’s turn to read, they should be following along in their own book. At the end of the chapter, the group will work together to come up with a group summary for the chapter.


At the end of each period we will stop with 10 minutes left and put together a summary of the chapter as a whole class, with each station giving their input.


Students will spend time at one station on each reading day. The groups will remain the same for the duration of the unit. Every in-class reading day the students will go to a different station. As we progress through the novel, they will be able to experience each station more than once.
