After talking with students about waves, and wave properties (amplitude, wavelength, and frequency) students will complete stations that focus on sound waves.
Students will have a menu board that break the activities into appetizers, entries, and desserts. Students must complete 2 out of 4 appetizers, all 6 entries, and then if time allows they may work on any of the 3 desserts.
The stations will take students 2-3 days to complete. Appetizers: Two of the appetizers focus on how we hear sounds, students complete a fill in the blank paragraph or create a flow map showing how we hear sounds. One station students look at four different pictures of waves and must identify the amplitude and frequency and then give an example of a sound that would match that amplitude (volume) and frequency (pitch). One station students are given sounds and must describe the amplitude and frequency of the sound based on the volume and pitch.
Entries: Stereo Hanger- Using handers and string students look at how sound can travel through objects and try to create a science experiment by changing one variable. Paper Cup Phones- looking at which cup phones would work the best. Homemade Guitar- students look at how the different thickness of the rubber band would effect the sound. Articles- students pick one of three articles to read. Each article is at a different reading level, all articles are about hearing loss. Tuning Fork- students look at how waves transfer energy by looking at turing forks and water. Desserts: only once appetizers and entries are done Careers- looking at different careers that require a knowledge of sound waves Sound sandwich- creating a sound sandwich board Straw kazoo- creating a kazoo from a straw
When students are finished, using a document camera to review stations with students to ensure they have received the proper knowledge from each stations. |

DI comes in with the articles that students read, which appetizers they complete, as well as how much help they receive with the other stations.
There are also desserts to be completed for students who complete the statins fast. |
