Book Report / ELA

Objectives:
Tsw identify main elements of a story.
Tsw create a book report.

Standards:
Describe characters, setting, and major events in a story, using key details.
With guidance and support from adults, use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including collaboration with peers.

Introduction:
Ttw read a short story to the class then, with the help of the students, identify the characters, setting, main idea, problem, and solution of the story. Ttw demonstrate the Kids Book Report App on the projector by filling in the students’ answers into each section accordingly. Ttw print the completed book report, demonstrating how to staple it together.

Procedure:
Each student will find a book to read from the class library. When reading is complete, tsw use an Ipad to complete a book report on the Kids Book Report App. Tsw complete the sections character, setting, problem, solution, and their views on the story. Students will print their book report upon completion and teacher approval. Students may need some guidance until they are able to complete this on their own.
This activity will be used as a center activity or an early finisher activity. It can be used as an ongoing activity throughout the school year increasing the difficulty level of the books read as their reading level increases.

The iPad keyboards are extra so that the students can also practice basic typing skills.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This App can be used for any subject. You can use non fiction books to learn science and social studies. This can also be used as an assessment tool. This also integrates technology in students' everyday class activities.
Follow-Up
This activity can be used to prepare students for writing book reports on their own. Once mastered, they can create their own book reports just by writing or typing it themselves.
