Background Knowledge: Students have learned about the structure of the cell membrane and how molecules/compounds are transported across the membrane. They will be asked to develop a multimedia project explaining the function of the cell membrane and how molecules are transported across the membrane through the various processes. They may choose to work as an individual or a small group (3-4 students).

Objectives: (Colorado Science Standard 2.3)
1. Students will design a model of the cell membrane.
2. Students will develop, communicate, and justify an evidence-based scientific explanation regarding cell structures, components, and their specific functions.
3. Students will be able to creatively demonstrate their knowledge of cell parts and functions by choosing their presentation method.

Procedures/Activities:
1. Students will take notes and draw a diagram of the cell membrane including the components that make up membranes.
2. Students will take notes on each of the processes involved in cell transport.
3. Students will be view various animations on cell transport.
4. Students will be responsible for completing a multimedia project in which they have to show movement across the cell membrane including the following processes:
-cell membrane structure
-osmosis (passive transport)
-diffusion (passive transport)
-facilitated diffusion (passive transport)
-active transport
5. Students will choose the method of presentation. This could include an iPad video using iMovie, telling a story on the app Toontastic, recording a kids show.

Follow-Up: Students will be able to view presentations from their other classmates through use of a projector and Apple TV. This will allow additional exposure to the concepts through repetitive viewing and enhance creativity when developing their ideas and presentations. These could be used as a lesson in the future to teach another class.

Assessment/Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on a rubric that assesses the following:
-creativity
-accuracy of information presented
-presentation method
-delivery and interaction with peers
There will also be an end of the unit assessment.
Comments
I have completed this project for the last 2 years. It is difficult when students choose to make an iMovie and there are not enough resources to use. Sometimes alternative presentations must be used. Having access to more technology would greatly improve students ability to develop technology based presentation of the material.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
LA: Students could write a report reflecting on what they learned, including challenges and solutions to problems encountered.
