Unit Theme: Online Safety Subject Area: Information
Literacy and Technology
Number of Learners: 27 Grade Level: 3rd Grade
Time Needed: Two 30 minute sessions

Rationale: Staying safe while using "online" devices
Objectives: Introduce students to onine safety
Understand the dangers of meeting face-to-face with strangers met via the Internet.
Recognize the importance of recognizing and reporting to a trusted adult any suspicious behavior or bullying by an online stranger.
Practice password security.
Curriculum Alignment: ISTE Standards:
5a. Students advocate and practice safe, legal, and responsible use of information and technology.
5d. Students exhibit leadership for digital citizenship.

Resources Needed:
whiteboard
whiteboard voting system
document camera
microphone
audio enhancement system

Procedures:
Gather students on floor in front of the Whiteboard.
Display smart goal: - The student learning result
Display words and definitions students may be unfamiliar with
Explain that staying safe online has similarities to staying safe in the neighborhood but there are differences too!

Accomodations:
Use audio enhancement system for all students, have interpreter available for hearing impaired student, Students may sit at nearby tables if uncomfortable,


Assessment: Informal Assessment Informal Assessment: Using a whiteboard voting system students will answer the questions to the easy quiz on BrainPop JR.
Reflection and reteaching: Following this lession we will have a conversation about the quiz questions and then take the “hard” quiz. If students are not ready for the hard quiz we will review “online safey” using the Netsmarts Curriculum found at: http://mediasmarts.ca/game/cybersense-and-nonsense-second-adventure-three-cyberpigs
