Procedure:
Pre-Instruction: Go to http://www.discovery.com/tv-shows/other-shows/videos/assignment-discovery-underground-railroadto get the video. Set up student Skaffle accounts if they have not already done so. Show students how to open Skaffle to find graphic organizers.

Model the strategy: Show students the short video about Harriet Tubman. Help students identify the answers for each component of the chart. Students must find
Somebody – Main character (Abolitionists)
Wanted – what the character wanted (black people to be free)
But – the problem (there was slavery)
So – Solution (people worked together to create and use the Underground Railroad.)


Review: Briefly go over the expectations of what to do during the activity. Students should be allowed to work in groups or work independently.

Small Groups: All students must use the Skaffle app to complete a SWBS chart with the story from yesterday “Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad”.

Whole Group: Volunteers may share what information they decided to put into the graphic organizer.

Assessment: While using Skaffle, the teacher has access to student progress and can view what they are doing without being at their group. Students must submit their graphic organizers to the teachers account.

Post-Instruction: Review each students Skaffle submission.

Motivational Strategy: Prior knowledge & Choice: Students have been sharing and learning information about Harriet Tubman for a few days. Students will have the opportunity to choose if they want to complete this activity as a group.

Grouping Strategy:
Work in groups of no more than 3 if they choose. Students can pick their own groups within 1 minute.

Adaptations/Accommodations:
Dependent readers can work in a group with the teacher since the teacher will be able to watch what the other groups are doing by periodically checking her Skaffle account.

Independent readers can use graphic organizers that have each of the following components:

Wanted
But
So
Then

So
