Skills: 1. Identify and use simple map symbols and key/legend (G-1A-E1) 3. Describe a map as a representation of a place (G-1A-E1) 4.Locate places on the school campus and describe their relative location (G-1A-E2) 6.Create simple maps to identify the relative location of places in the school and community (G-1A-E3)
Time: Two Days
Plans
1.The teacher will show different types of maps on the projector. Show a global map, a US map, a state map, a town map and a neighborhood map. Have the students discuss the differences between the maps displayed.
2. Explain to the students that the class will be discussing “neighborhood” maps. Ask what would a neighborhood map have? (Streets, houses, stop signs, etc.) List those on the board.
3. Show the neighborhood map powerpoint. (find the links for this below)
4. Create a t-chart comparing a US map and a neighborhood map.
5. Have the students work with some of the neighborhood map interactives listed on the First Grade Site (Listed as Unit 2 Social Studies)
6. If you have Kidspiration 3 software, you can download the neighborhood map templates on the Kidspiration Site listed at the bottom. Remember you NEED the Kidspiration 3 software to “view” the template. You can download a free 30 day trial version to see if you like the software.
7. While in computer stations, have the rest of the students draw maps of their house, bedroom or school. |
