With the introduction of the new Common Core standards to the students, it is important to give them as much exposure to technology as possible.

Day 1: I will model different ways of breaking base ten blocks apart and putting them back together for different numbers. I will connect this part of the lesson to previous lessons on place value. The students will use the Mimio interactive whiteboard and portable Mimio pad in collaborative groups of 4 to break different numbers (5, 25, 325) into their base ten block components on the Mimio pads which will automatically appear on the interactive whiteboard at the front if the room with wireless connection. On this day, the purpose is for the students to look at numbers in different units with modeling. The interactive whiteboard also allows the students to break and put back together the base ten blocks.

Day 2: The students will quickly review what they learned on day 1 with different numbers. The challenge will be showing different base ten block representations for multi-digit numbers. Next the students will show adding simple numbers using base ten blocks on the Mimio pads. For example: 2+3, 5+7, 9+6, 10+2 etc. The purpose here is to show regrouping when working with base ten blocks. I will also be able to check their critical thinking skills when the mimio pads are connected to the whiteboard. I will be checking to see if students are able to manipulate the numbers into different representations. For example, 9+6 can also be seen as 10 +5 if I move one block for the 6 and give it to the 9. If they aren't able to manipulate the numbers I will guide their thinking. The groups that show different thinking will explain their discoveries to the classroom using the interactive whiteboard at the front of the room.

Day 3 - 5: The students will continue their work from day 3 but using bigger numbers. The intent is for the students to understand the different ways of writing and adding numbers.

Day 6: The students will be given the challenge of showing different ways of adding 3,247+ 53 in groups of four with teacher facilitation and guidance as an assessment.
Comments
I am requesting $849 for the Mimio teach Interactive system which changes my current whiteboard into an interactive one IF Im not able to get a grant for the Mimio projector touch above.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
In general, the Mimio interactive whiteboard will be used for ALL math and science lessons. This particular lesson integrates listening, speaking, and writing because the students have to explain their thinking and the thinking of others.
Follow-Up
I will move into subtracting and multiplying multi-digit numbers with base ten blocks. The students will then create lessons using the Mimio technology to show understanding of number sense.
