Keywords: Plant Parts, Trees
Subject(s): Biology, Technology, Science
Grade 3
School: Oakcliff Elementary School, Doraville, GA
Planned By: Ashley Fecho
Original Author: Dawn Hogestyn, Millers Creek
Students will begin a study of plants in the fall of the school year. During this study, students will learn the different parts of plants and their jobs.

As an ongoing project, students will choose a tree on the school grounds to adopt for the year. They will make a journal about their tree in which they will keep data such as the type of tree, estimated size, location, coloring, etc.

To reinforce learning the different parts of the plant and their jobs, students will photograph each part, place the photographs in their journals, and label them. They will make photographs and observations at different times throughout the year to study the life cycles and seasonal changes of the trees.

Students will also be able to use their photographs in a PowerPoint presentation about the parts of plants that will be shared with the class on our classroom SMART Board.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
In the spring I incorporate my study of trees with the novel Because of Winn Dixie because of the importance trees play in the novel, and we end our year by planting our own trees.
