EQ: MGSE5.OA.1 Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions with these symbols.
MGSE5.NBT.2 Explain patterns in the number of zeroes of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10.
Teaching exponents is a prerequisite skill that will be taught before teaching the standards above.

• What is an exponent?
• How do I evaluate exponents?
• What happens when we multiply a whole number by powers of 10?
• How can you represent the quantity of a multiple of 10?
• What pattern is created when a number is multiplied by a power of 10?

Learning Target

Tuesday: I can understand and evaluate exponents by applying the meaning of the vocabulary from the word wall.
Wednesday: I can explain patterns in a product by understanding exponents and powers of ten.
Thursday: I can explain patterns in a product by understanding exponents and powers of ten.

Interventions for Targeted Students
Send home study paper with steps and explanation of exponents and powers of ten. Pull out group for small group to work one on one with teacher during center time.

Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Include reading and ELA into centers when practicing exponents by having word problems that have exponents in them.
