Read a short introduction of the Early American Civilizations: Inca, Maya, and Aztec.
Divide students into 3 groups. Have each group discuss who likes reading out loud, who likes to follow along silently, and who likes to be read to, and who likes to take notes. Then have students read about all three civilizations out loud to one another in their group.
Once students have read about each civilization, have them present a skit idea about one of the civilizations. Tell them you will assign the civilizations based on how strong their arguments and ideas are.
Spend the next few classes having each group research their civilization. They should make a digital map and another visual aid using the technology available in the classroom.
Once you feel your students have enough information about their civilization, have them make a skit about their civilization. Give them a list of vocabulary words, important events, and important locations which they must incorporate into the skits.
Have them perform their skit in front of their classmates while someone videos it. Watch all of them together the following day.
You can also have students create a quiz for their skit that other classmates must fill out after watching their skit. It can include the vocabulary, important evens, and locations that were required.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This could be a part of theater or drama, geography, and art.
Follow-Up
Watch videos of the skits together to review learned material. Have each group create a fill in the blank quiz for their classmates to answer according to their skit.
