TEKS ELAR 3.17.A plan a first draft by selecting a genre appropriate for conveying the intended meaning to an audience and generating ideas through a range of strategies (e.g., brainstorming, graphic organizers, logs, journals) 3.17.C revise drafts for coherence, organization, use of simple and compound sentences, and audience 3.17.E publish written work for a specific audience. Math 3.5 B represent and solve one- and two-step multiplication and division problems within 100 using arrays, strip diagrams, and equations Technology Applications 3.2A draft, edit, and publish products in different media individually and collaboratively English Language Proficiency Standards 3.3E share information in cooperative learning interactions.
Content Objective (What): The students will draft, edit, and publish a podcast explaining their favorite strategy for solving multiplication and division word problems. Language Objective (How): The students will work together in cooperative groups to create a successful podcast.
Purpose (Why): When we explain our favorite strategy to others, it helps them see other perspectives. Also, by creating a podcast we are working on our STEM skills. Writing Component: Students will brainstorm ideas and create a rough draft of the script that they will use that explains their favorite strategy. They will then revise and edit their draft and create a final piece.
Materials: Podcasting equipment • Digital recorder • Microphones • Headphones • Cords • Computer Anchorchart paper Colored pencils Lined draft paper Instructional Steps Motivation: To hook the students, the teacher will play for the students a podcast that was recorded reviewing the strategies for multiplication and division word problems: strip diagrams, arrays, and equations.
Direct Teaching: -Review necessary vocabulary: • Strip diagram: part-part-whole • Equation- a number sentence • Array- a model consisting of rows and columns
-The teacher will have students talk with a partner/group about which strategy they feel is best to solve multi-step multiplication and division word problems with
-Students will then share and defend their reasons with the whole class
-Students will be grouped by their favorite strategy for the project
Guided Practice: -The teacher will model (whole group) for students the entire writing process for how to defend their chosen strategy using a strategy not listed in this objective
-The teacher will then model how to use the podcasting equipment
Independent Practice: *The independent part of this project will take at least three days to complete from rough draft to published podcast*
-In their strategy group, students will begin their rough draft explaining why they like using that specific strategy • Students will write their draft on large anchor chart paper • Each student must take part in writing the draft
-As a group, the students will then revise and edit their draft using colored pencils
-After the group has finished the editing process, each student will then write a final draft on lined draft paper
-The students will then begin recording their podcast using the equipment listed above (with any needed assistance from the teacher)
-With the help of their teacher, the students will then upload their podcast to the computer for final publishing on the classroom’s podcast channel
Closure -As a class, the students will then listen to each group’s podcast.
-Each student will then answer the following sentence stem on a Post-It as an Exit Ticket:
My favorite strategy for multiplication and division word problems has changed/stayed the same because _____________. Assessment of Learning -The final draft of the script -The podcast -Exit Ticket |
