Objective: BTEOTL SWBAT Name the major characteristics of nonvascular plants


Lab Activity: Using Technology

Students will be grouped with partners and will be using microscopes, a hand lens, their chromebooks, and promethean board.

SW first research what are the characteristics of nonvascular plants using their chromebooks.

SW create a spreadsheet using Google Sheets with the checklist for the various characteristics with room to insert the name of each plant to determine if it is nonvascular or not. They will also use this as their checklist to find each characteristic.

Using the microscopes and hand lens SW find each of the required characteristics in each sample.

SW input data into their spreadsheets.

SW will research one of the provided samples and create a 6 slide presentation using Google Slides to present to the class.

REFLECTION
Students will answer the reflection question through Class Flow to be displayed on the promethean board:

What characteristic(s) do you think will distinguish nonvascular plants from vascular plants and why? Do you think they will have any characteristics in common and why?

These items can be used over and over again in a variety of lessons and not just the outlined activity.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This activity could be linked to geography (where do specific plants grow), and art by creating/drawing the life cycle of the plant and the biome it lives in.
Follow-Up
Follow up activities could include doing a similar research study on vascular plants and identify plants based on their individual characteristics. We would also plant an assortment of different specimens to record observational data and conclusions with.
