School: Leman Academy of Excellence, Marana, Tucson, AZ
Planned By: Cathy Letkeman
Original Author: Cathy Letkeman, Tucson
Create a movie score for a 3-5-scene movie

-scholars would write a screenplay (with or without dialogue *i.e. Silent movie)
-shoot it with iPad video camera
-create a score/soundscape in garageband using loops, pre-recorded sounds and/or original compositions
-create movie in iMovie combining the score/soundscape & video
-scholars could mirror the process film score composers use (eg. create the video first, then add music afterwards as they are watching the video)

Classical Application: (interrelation of subject areas; history & literature in particular)

Scholars could be charged to incorporate a historical connection, tied to the history timeline period they are covering in their regular classroom. For example, if they were studying modern times, beginning with the late 1800's they could create a black & white video, creating a silent film a la Charlie Chaplin from the silent film era 1894-1929

Scholars could be charged to use story elements/literary tools for their 3-5-scene storyboard (hero, villain, climax, resolution, problem, comic relief, etc.); possible collaboration with classroom teacher; Could be original content, or require scholars to use literature they are studying in their regular classroom to provide the core content for their movie (though they might choose to interpret it in a more contemporary setting which bumps things up a level in terms of layers of understanding/application/analysis)
Cross-Curriculum Ideas

Follow-Up
Scholars could have a "film festival" where they share their films with the school as assemblies; provide popcorn or invite younger scholars to attend the films in their classroom set up as a movie theater (if it were a silent movie, the theater could be set up to represent a theater of that time period)
