Knowing that sometimes the best way to learn something is to have to teach, we have developed this initiative for all schools in our district. One team per school is competing to win a Smartboard for their school. The district has been able to purchase two: one for elementary schools to compete for and one for middle schools to compete for. Elementary grades are 4-6.
The students are expected to develop a presentation of 30-45 minutes long on the Smartboard that incorporates as much technology as they can. They must come up with the idea, do the research and create the presentation. The teacher/mentor will guide them and the Director of Technology is available as a technical resource.
While learning is the reward, our hope is to give every student a technology gift for their efforts. We are looking to give the "winning" teams flip video cameras and all other students iPod shuffles or equivalent. Additionally, we are looking to give every school that competes (but does not win) an electronic slate for the classroom of their choice.
The enrollment for this initiative starts in September. The presentations will be scheduled for mid-November. Awards given after Thanksgiving break. The presentations will be judged by a committee of non-partisan district employees. |

Comments |
Our hope is to give the students a project-based learning environment where they get to "talk" in the language that they are sometimes more conversant than their teachers, technology. |
Cross-Curriculum Ideas |
This initiative can cross many curricula in the development of the material, we would encourage the teacher/mentor to help the students explore how the topic impacts their other learning. |
