Lesson description:

1. We will plan and build (with parent help) two planter boxes outside of our classroom.
2. Invite families to participate in a "Culture Day." At this event have students/families discuss favorite fruits and vegetable of their native culture. Brainstorm a list of fruits/vegetables that represent the diverse cultural backgrounds represented in our class.
3. With the class, research what season(s) the different fruits/vegetables can be grown and what the needs of each plant is. (ie. full-sun, acidic soil, etc.)
4. With the class, decide which plants to grow during which season.
5. Purchase or ask for donations for planting materials.
6. Plant and care for plants. (Integrate teaching of plant parts, plant needs, gardening basics, fertilization and composting).
7. During the planting and growth process video and take photographs of the process and of the changes that occur over time.
8. Post photos/videos on our class blog in order to keep our families and e-penpals up to date on our learning and experiences.
9. As a culminating experience, harvest the fruits/vegetables and invite families to share a "Friendship Salad" (or stir fry) prepared by the students.
