Grades P-K through 12
School: Baldwin Elementary School, Baldwin City, KS
Planned By: Debbie Wallace
Original Author: Debbie Wallace, Baldwin City
One of the quickest ways I can engage all the learners in my kindergarten classroom, is to post a 'question of the day' where they will have to respond by making a choice, whether it is a yes/no response or where they have to make a choice from a selection. Once the question is asked, each child will respond by bringing their photo of themselves, which has a velcro tab on the back, and place it under their response choice. Once all students have participated, we then analyze the data as I ask questions like, 'which one has the most? least? same or equal?', how many more/less ___ are there than ____?', or 'how many kids participated today?'. Depending on your level of students, this activity would be appropriate at all ages with the questioning being more advanced looking at mean, median, and mode, etc.

Using the question of the day with their photos gives all students, especially non readers, an opportuniy for success, plus ALL kindergarteners love to see their photos up in the classroom!
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This idea utilizes math and reading on a daily basis. It can also easily be connected to social studies and science depending on the type of question posed.
