Grade: Kindergarten SOL: K.4 a, b and c Song: “I’m a Jack-O-Lantern” (piggy back song to “I’m a Little Tea Pot”)
GENERAL OBJECTIVE(S): The student will investigate and understand that the position, motion, and physical properties of an object can be described. Key concepts include a) colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple), white, and black; b) shapes (circle, triangle, square, and rectangle) and forms (flexible/stiff, straight/curved); c) textures (rough/smooth) and feel (hard/soft);relative size and weight (big/little, large/small, heavy/light, wide/thin, long/short)
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: The student will be able to… Define descriptive words
Identify appropriate adjectives relating to color, texture, and shape.
Explain/give examples of different uses of a pumpkin during Autumn/Winter
Recall the lyrics and used them in a song
Selects specific descriptive words within the song
Recalls song and Reproduces movement done by the teacher.
PROCEDURES: The teacher will...
Introduce the class to a review of using descriptive words using a Halloween theme. Show the students a small pumpkin; ask students to describe any specific colors, shapes and textures of that pumpkin. Ask then further explain the specific use of pumpkins during this time of year (Jack-O-Lanterns on Halloween, foods on holidays, decoration, etc.) Introduce “I’m a Jack-O-Lantern” by reading then singing lyrics from poster Ask students to identify any descriptive words from the song (which can be seen on the poster) Repeat the song and incorporate dance/movement
Closing: The teacher will conduct an overview of descriptive vocabulary related to the pumpkin.
Evaluation: Students will be evaluated/assessed during the lesson by their use of appropriate descriptive vocabulary and participation in singing and movement.
Materials: The Pumpkin Book: full of Halloween history, poems, songs, art projects, games and recipes for parents and teachers to use with young children by Susan Olson Higgins, a small pumpkin, poster of song lyrics of “I’m a Jack-O-Lantern”
Provision for Individual Differences: Students who are not able to perform adequately with others may be given the necessary accommodations he or she needs in order to comprehend the material and perform the activity to the best of their ability. For example if a student has an auditory disability, they may use the poster to look at the words and the teacher will articulate her words strongly so that lip-reading may be done and if able, the teacher may use sign language or any basic hand gestures to physically describe the lyrics.
