"Brain Pop"/"In Plain Mathematics" Like Math Concept Video

Students will work in groups of three or four students to create a video on a mathematics concept in the format of an In Plain English or Brain Pop video. Students will be asked to choose topics from Algebra or Pre-Algebra (depending on the class) that they will research. Each group will be asked to write a script for their video that must be submitted to the teacher prior to the filming of the project. Each group must also show all of their props to the teacher prior to filming.

Once the scripts and materials have been submitted, each group will conference with the teacher to get feedback on their lessons. The teacher will advise if their needs to be adjustments or additions to the lessons. The students will then film their videos.

After all groups have filmed their projects, students in the class will view the videos. Each group will also be asked to create an in class activity or worksheet to go along with the video. The students in the class will participate in the activity or do the worksheet to assess if the video was informative enough for the students to understand the topic.

I already tried this project once with my own digital camera and it was okay, but I think the flip cameras will make this project a lot better and more powerful for students.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This concept can be used for any content area. We can use it to explain taxes, interest, and other money items and link it to Economics. We could also create videos on scatter plots and link them to Social studies data from various dates.
Follow-Up
Students will be asked to reflect on their own videos in a self reflection piece for their digital portfolios. Students will be asked what they learned from the video presentation and what they would have changed about the project.
