Majestic Creatures

This lesson comes after the children have reviewed/practiced the following:

identifying sensory details in narratives
using word referents to create suspense/anticipation
identifying elements needed in the main event
identifying elements needed in a satisfying extended story ending

Procedure:

1. The children will be provided with 3 websites that contain images of butterflies. The websites have been researched and approved by the teacher. Images of different butterflies or varied images of the same butterfly can be chosen by the students. Images will be saved on the computer in their folder.

2. Once images have been saved, the children will create a collage of their butterflies using a free collage maker on the web. Completed collages will help the children develop a list of phrases that vividly describe their butterfly.

3. The children will display and share their collages and descriptions with the class. Classmates will offer suggestions/ideas to add to each child's vivid phrase list. Collages will also be printed and posted.

4. The children will write a real or imaginary experience of seeing a butterfly using their list of vivid details and their knowledge of word referents, main event elements, and extended story ending elements.

Conclusion:

The narratives will be displayed with their collages!!

Plan Time: approximately 3 to 4 hours depending on the children's speed in choosing their images
