This lesson incorporates many different skills and also allows the students to create an authentic learning project. This project can be saved and serve as a fun reading book for younger students in order to learn their way around the school or any other environment.
Students will be creating either a print or digital book in the same style as the "Where's Waldo" books. Students will create a small icon that looks like themselves and place it in the foreground of a page. Photographs taken with a digital camera of different locations around the school will serve as the backgrounds for the pages.
The number of lessons and amount of time for each step will vary depending upon age of students, equipment available, number of adults to assist and use of classroom or computer lab (if possible).

1.Students will begin by learning how to use the digital cameras.
2. Students will take pictures of different locations around the school such as the library, the nurse's office, etc.
3. Students will save the pictures in a graphics program such as KidPix or Tux Paint.
4. Students will create a small graphic icon that represents the student in KidPix or Tux Paint.
5. Students will import the photos they took behind their icon as a background to portray a similar format to the "Where's Waldo" books. Students will have at least 5 different pages.
6. Students will save their pages and put them into a print or online format to share with others.

The finished books can be shared with younger students who are just learning about the various places in the school.

Lesson Objectives:
Students will be able to:
1. Operate a digital camera including taking a picture and downloading it.
2. Create a small graphical representation of themselves
3. Insert a photograph as a background
Follow-Up
If the book is in a digital format, students can create audio that gives hints about the location. In a print format, students can add text that includes hints about the location.
