Desert Tortoise Adaptations

Problem: How is the Desert Tortoise adapted to its surroundings?

Materials: Camera, Computer, Pencil, Notebook

Procedure:
1. Observe the Desert Tortoise in its natural surroundings. Take notes about the habitat.
What kind of plants do you see? What is the terrain like?

2. Take pictures of the habitat.

3. Observe the tortoise close up - do not touch. Take notes of your observations. What does his body look like? Is his skin smooth or rough? What is his shell like? What does his mouth look like? Etc.

4. Take several pictures of the tortoise. Include different viewpoints.

5. After careful observations. Download your pictures to the computer.

6. Design a powerpoint of the tortoise habitat and tortoise.

7. Powerpoint needs to include:
• What a habitat is?
• What is an adaptation and how is the tortoise adapted to its environment?
• What is biodiversity and why it is important in habitats?
• What are some threats to the desert tortoise and how it is being protected?

8. Powerpoint at least 8 pages, include a title page, and 2 sources.
