Month: _End of the Year Portfolio_____ Mode: Functional Texts (web page)

Students will create a student web page to showcase the technology-based projects that they create throughout the year.

Orientation:
The first three months of the year, students will focus on research skills and learning technology skills such as word processing, spreadsheets, how to podcast, using digital cameras, web page creation, video editing, etc.

Some website-based process strategies to teach:
Meaning (Purpose)
Audience
Using Graphic Organizers (Storyboarding)
Fact vs. Opinion
Adding hyperlinks, images, and graphics
Formatting features
Appropriate Titles (navigation menu)
Choosing a variety of genres (published works)
Web site publishing

Application:
While involved in investigations, community service, field trips, and other enrichment; students will chose a topic of interest in small groups, do the research, a present the information in a technology-based format as mini-seminars. Through this process, they will also be creating podcasts, charts and graphs, writing pieces, maintaining the class website, etc.

Showcase:
After planning the pages and navigation menu items, students will use a graphic organizer to plan hyperlinks, and choose their student created materials. Then students will create a webpage to showcase what they have learned and accomplished throughout the year.
Comments
In order for students to work towards this goal all year in every subject, a classroom set of laptops would be ideal.

Be careful to avoid the use of personal photos or information that would put the student at risk. On my class website, my students choose pen names just like some adult authors do. I would recommend this on a student website also.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Items for the portfolio could come from any subject area.
Follow-Up
At the end of the year, students can copy the website file onto a flashdrive and take it home to publish. The website username can be used again the next year, as long as they are generic.
