Grades 5 through 7
School: L'Anse Creuse Middle School S, Harrison Twp, MI
Planned By: Tina Bennion
Original Author: Tina Bennion, Harrison Twp
Students will be assigned a fantasy novel to read and discuss in literature circles based on their current reading level. Students will complete novels in 3-4 weeks. The novel options are: Monster’s Ring (below grade level), Inkheart (grade level), and Children of the Lamp (above grade level). Students will have class time everyday to either read or discuss in their literature circles the novels that they are reading.

As a culminating activity, students will work in small groups of 3 or 4 to visually summarize and point out the elements of fantasy that were in their novel. Students can choose how they want to go about visually summarizing and displaying the elements of fantasy. Some ideas to do this are: reenact the story themselves and take pictures, create cartoon strips, make a mini puppet skit, or etc.

To create this, students will be given access to 1 digital camera, 1 computer, and the program iPhoto or PhotoStory3. When projects are finished, the students will present their projects to the class on the classroom projector and projector screen.

Students will be graded on fully summarizing their story, representing elements of fantasy, and being visually creative with their projects.
