Example: Students reflect on a "well remembered event" in their life and begin by writing a 250-500 word personal narrative or they tell a story about where they live. The purpose of this story is to convey a message or make a point, a personal point of view. Capture your audiences attention in the beginning and hold it throughout the story. Stories that have emotional content are most engaging.
Materials Needed: Laptop/computer, 2-5 hours of lab time. Software: MovieMaker and Audacity (free download) A portable drive for storage or moving the file about. A CD writer in the computer to burn a CD-R
After writing and editing the narrative, student rehearse reading the story. Next they can create a story board that they film or photograph. This can be done on a set, on boards, or through photographs that are collected. The images are then downloaded to moviemaker, or the video of the different sets/voices are downloaded to the computer and then the editing begins with the software on the program that is being used.
Stories can be any length. Ideally, for a school film, 2-5 minutes is ample. Using the flip video cameras would be really quick to use. Using a digital camera to take pictures of images, tableaux, etc. are also very effective. The final addition is either recording your voice, or adding music or both.
Share your production with your friends, family, or a film festival at your school! Anything is possible.....

The possibilities are limitless with tools like this. Just imagine.... |
Cross-Curriculum Ideas |
This can easily be integrated with social studies, science, math, music, art, language arts, etc. Again, if the student has to the tools to create a movie, or tell story that is unique to their thinking, or reflects their experience - then the student is learning. This could also be done as an individual, or small group, or even a whole class could collaborate. This is the 21st century.... |
Follow-Up |
We have several special social studies events throughout the year and by adding digital storytelling to the events, or posting them on-line would allow the students to share what they have created. Even a multi-media art-show. "Oh, the places we could go!" - Dr. Seuss |
