Grades K through 4
School: Northeast Elementary School, Pikeville, NC
Planned By: Rebecca Blair

The goals of this lesson are: 1) that children will learn how to read and condense a book to be presented to others; 2) to get the practice of public speaking and understanding the concept that one needs to practice before doing any public speaking; 3) to promote a book of interest to the student; 4) to begin to understand how a video camera works and how it can be utilized for different functions (to record something, to possibly edit it and then to have it projected through the television around the school); and, 5) to learn to operate a video camera and use basic software for editing.

The students will sign up with a parent volunteer to prepare for their Book Talk presentations. After selecting and reading the book, the students will then write a short summary, edit it with help and then practice their presentation with an adult. The final version of their Book Talks will be videotaped by other students with the help of an adult.

Every morning, the students produce a in-house morning news show called WLDC. The Book Talk Report will become a regular part of this show as a way to promote reading, writing, social speaking and social skills. It will also provide technological learning as the children begin to master the video camera and the photographic elements that are also involved with videotaping.
