Video Yearbook/Senior Video

Textbook: TELEVISION PRODUCTION; A CLASSROOM APPROACH: , Keith Kyker and Christopher Curchy, Libraries Unlimited, 2004.

Lesson 1 Students will learn how to operate and maintain digital filming equipment such as Flip cameras, and Mini DV camcorders.
Assignment: Film scenes and people around the school and watch and discuss
in class.

Lesson 2 Students will learn basic videography skills, including lighting, focus, framing, tripod and battery use.
Assignment: Create a video that demonstrates proper and improper backlight,
focus, panning, tilting, close-up, bust shot, lead room, head room, long shot,
macrofocus, etc.

Lesson 3 Students will learn how to use wireless microphones with the Mini DV camcorders.
Assignment: Create a video using a hand-held mic, a lavalier mic, and a desk mic varying the mic distance 1, 3, 5, 7, and 12 inches away from mouth.

Lesson 4 Students will brainstorm activities to film for Quarters 1-4; insuring that all major school events are included.
Assignment: Each student will be assigned 1 or 2 extra curricular groups to film
each quarter for the video yearbook.

Lesson 5 Students will meet in a group to watch and critique each others video
yearbook footage.
Assignment: Students will refilm their assigned extra curricular group, incorporating tips they learned through critique.

Lesson 6 Students will learn how to capture video
Assignment: Students will capture video yearbook footage using Tool Factory
Movie Maker.

Lesson 7 Students will learn how to trim video clips and create a story board.
Assignment: Students will trim video yearbook scenes and create a story
board one and one-half minutes in length of quality action footage.

Lesson 8 Students will learn how to create transitions for their edited footage.
Assignment: Students will add 3or more different transitions to their storyboard.


Lesson 8 Students will learn how to record audio into the movie timeline
Assignment: Students will select music that compliments the action of their
edited video and record it into the timeline.

Lesson 9 Students will learn how to create a title screen for their edited footage using Tool Factory Movie Maker.
Assignment: Students will create an opening title for their video yearbook piece and create it at the beginning of their edited footage.

Lesson 10 Students will learn how to get good video of photographs.
Assignment: Students will use a magnetic mounting plate, a tripod and camera/camcorder to record baby and senior photos of high school seniors.

Lesson 11 Students will learn how to turn video shots into a slide show using
Tool Factory Movie Maker.
Assignment: Students will transfer video footage of baby and senior photos to
to the editor and create a slide show that mixes from the baby to the senior
photo for each student.

Lesson 12 Students will learn how to copy their edited footage to DVD, using the classroom DVD burner.
Assignment: Students will burn their edited footage (movie) to DVD.

Lesson 13 Students will learn how to hook up and operate a multi-media projector.
Assignment: Students will set up the equipment needed and show their senior video to parents, faculty, and students during Senior awards night.

Lesson 14 Students will learn how to combine all of their editied videio yearbook movie clips into one video yearbook production using Tool Factory Movie Maker.
Assignment: Students will capture all of their edited video yearbook movie clips into Tool Factory Movie Maker and combine them into one single movie entitled SHS Video Yearbook .

Lesson 15 Students will learn to market their movie.
Assignment: Students will design an animated video adverstising campaign to sell their video yearbook to classmates, teachers and parents.
