School: Shelbyville High School, Shelbyville, IL
Planned By: Becky Walden
Original Author: Becky Walden, Shelbyville
Students will work individually or in groups to create feature stories highlighting the following: a classroom activity, a talented student, a talented athlete, a word of the month, upcoming events, students speak, and tips for success.
They will write a script, narrate it, film video clips to go with the story and conduct interviews. They will capture video using Tool Factory Movie Maker, then edit the footage to create a feature story on video. Once all the feature stories have been combined into a single newscasts, they will add a 30 second lead, a title, and credits at the end. The newscast will be copied onto DVD and played on the Channel One network thoughout the school.
Comments
wireless microphones are optional, but they do improve sound quality.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Enhance the newscast with short skits written and acted by the students; for example the girl who tries out for football, or how to get a date for the dance, or act out a Christmas or Halloween poem. Do book reviews of new library books.
Follow-Up
Add a local, state, or national news story to challenge students to pay attention to the world around them, and to find out what their interests are.
