A power point of the school library was created using the architectural map provided when the school was renovated and reopened fall, 2010. Using a list of the various sections of the library on the right side, the students select the section they want to visit. This gives them an arrow and highlighted shape to indicate where those books are found. However, students became more interested when we added student created videos (using a borrowed FLIP camera) where students showed others the selected section. This is the lesson plan I used to help them create a movie to post onto the Power Point:
4th - 6th graders Announce after giving students an adequate amount of time to check books out that those wanting to make a movie for the Power Point may come forward for the FLIP. Ask students what section(s) need a movie, or an updated one. Talk through their ideas, give them the camera and ask them to keep their movie under 1 minute. Review the movies with the students and determine their favorite, allow them to refilm if needed. Post the movie on the Power Point. Share and enjoy with friends, new students and staff looking for materials in the Media Center.

1st - 6th graders use the interactive map when looking for books in the Media Center. Standards from the 21st Century learner states: "Today’s students need to develop information skills that will enable them to use technology as an important tool for learning, both now and in the future." This experience allows students to think critically and communicate effectively, building on a base of core academic subject knowledge. I would be happy to send the Power Point to you to view if needed.
