School: Lakeside Middle School, Hot Springs, AR
Planned By: Ronda Hughes
Original Author: Ronda Hughes, Hot Springs
Objective: Students will use many strategies; questioning, synthesizing, visualizing, and inferring. Many skills will be taught and practiced through this activity.

Students will learn how to interview someone; how to ask the right questions and how to get their interviewee to answer with more than yes or no.
Students will learn to synthesize the interview information. They will use the inverted triangle model of questions when writing the article.
Students will learn about text features and the proper use of them to capture the reader's attention.
Students will learn to use hook sentences in their writing. They will also use all five stages of the writing process.
Students will use Art Explosion Publisher (that I already own) to publish the newspaper.

I plan to use my small intervention groups ( I have four to five groups in each homeroom) to create this newspaper each month. I will rotate monthly, the two groups that will produce the newspaper. I believe that all students, whether high or low achieving, will gain knowledge and a strong sense of achievement in this on-going activity.

Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This lesson will incorporate reading, writing, and grammar. Other curriculum could be included; for example, conducting an interview with a veteran to report on a Veteran's Day presentation held at the school.
Follow-Up
We could compare and contrast our city's newspaper to our school's newspaper.
