After a tutorial on how to use the Flip cameras, we would present and discuss the skill unit being worked on including the: what, why and how. What are we doing? Why are we doing it? How do we know we've got it? After everyone has a chance to practice and use the skills, we would form partnerships. Each group would get a camera and the rubric for grading the skill. Students would take turns filming, analyzing, assessing and communicating what they see using the video from the Flip camera. Students can discuss the results and then film again with the adjustments recommended. This gives immediate and meaningful feedback to the student doing the skill with a chance to make changes and adjustments. They would then change places and allow the other student to do the same.
In our physical education curriculum, we have reoccurring themes that happen at different grade levels. For example, we teach throwing at multiple levels: kindergarten, second grade and fourth grade. This allows us the possibility of peer teaching and assessing not only in the same grade level but across grade levels as well. With the flip cameras, our older student experts can offer "how to" videos of the skill, safety features to focus on and video assessment with their younger counterparts. Not only does this help older students be the teacher and know the ins and outs of each skill, but it also encourages a positive, nurturing school environment.
Along the lines of safety. The playground safety lesson always occurs in physical education class at the beginning of the school year. With the Flip cameras, I would like to extend the peer teaching and safety of the p.e. skill to the playground. With the students creating the playground rules and safety video, they take ownership of the rules and how the playground should be used. This video can be used with the all students, the staff and new students to the school. These presentations could be put together in their technology class with each student group responsible for a different part of the playground, the rules of use and safety and the video of appropriate play. |

With 21st century skills being the focus for students, peer observations, teaching, process, evaluating, assessing and communicating are valuable skills. Allowing students to do this lesson with peers and then also be able to become the experts to teach the younger students is an amazing gift that fosters caring and nurturing within our school and community. |
