Fairytale/Fable Rewrite/Revision to Make Modern then Present to Their Class as a Play, Skit, Publish into Story, and Create a How to Power Point Lesson Plan

o Have students form groups (Number in groups should be 5 to 6 students; more could make working together difficult).
o Explain to students that they are going to rewrite/revise a fairytale/fable to make it more modern. They will be rewriting/revising it to make it seem like it is taking place in the two thousands. They will be updating the characters to fit the fairytale and be more modern, the plot will stay the same but all new details will be added.
o Once groups are chosen, students should brainstorm fairytale/fable they wish to rewrite/revise.
o Groups should then vote to see which fairytale/fable to rewrite/revise.
o Groups should then vote as to decide if it will be a play or a skit for the rewrite/revision in.
o Groups should then decide whose point of view they will tell the story from. This point of view will lead the direction the rewrite will take.
o Groups should then create a plan of work to teacher for approval. Each member of the group should get a specific job and also work cooperatively with the members of group on the parts of the project this calls for. (THIS IS SO EVERY MEMBER WORKS EQUALLY…IF ONE MEMBER DOES NOT DO THEIR JOB ONLY THEIR GRADE WILL BE MARKED DOWN…IF THERE IS A MEMBER THAT IS NOT WORKING COOPERATIVELY OR DOING THEIR ASSIGNED TASK, THEY SHOULD BE PULLED OUT AND DO THEIR OWN FAIRYTALE/FABLE!).
o Explain to the students what the plan of work is for. (Plan of work document attached).
o Once plan of work is approved they should begin outline. (Outline Attached).
o Once teacher has approved their Fairytale, Format, Plan of Work, and Outline the groups should begin working on their fairytale/fable rewrite/revision to make it modern.
o The group must then rewrite the fairytale in a very detailed full version. They must revise to make sure there are not any mistakes. They will turn the final draft into a book to be illustrated by drawings. They will also create a power point presentation.
o Each member of the group should have a character and a narrator.
o The group should also vote for a director this will cut down arguments. Explain the director should be a strong leader and they must all agree to do things their way.
o If more characters are needed they should create them but make them minor. (This goes for the narrator as well; they should be a minor character that shows up in the rewrite, somewhere along the way).
o Once characters are chosen students will write up a description of how they will portray them according to the format. (Description paper attached).
o As a group they should decide on settings for rewrite of complete fairytale. (Setting paper attached).
o The teacher will then create a folder for each group to store everything in. They will also explain that each student will receive an individual grade and a group grade. (If an individual in the group does not pull their weight in the group they will receive a lower grade than the others in their group).
o Explain that they will be graded by the teacher, their classmates, and themselves. At the end of the project they will receive evaluation forms. (Attached)
o The group will then begin writing the rough draft together. They can divide the book up so each person writes part of the story. They will then lay it out and compile it into one story. This will be the second draft and as a group they will revise it and re-write into a final draft.
o Once final draft is complete they will turn into teacher who will then explain to the students how to create the dialog for play or skit. (It is important that each student create the dialog for their own character).
o The teacher will provide the index cards and explain that students will go through each scene and write down what their character will say. Explain that the dialog is created from the story and it needs to bring the character to life. Just like in the movies how dialog is created for the characters from the story.
o Once the dialog is created the students will sketch out each scene. Once the scenes are created they will make a list of what they need to bring in as props and begin working on the scenery.
o Once the scenery is complete they will rehearse their play or skit.
o Once everything is done they will then perform their story for their classmates. The teacher will then video tape the performances during the presentation.
o When a performance is complete the audience can ask questions.
o When the performances are completed the students will be evaluated by themselves, their classmates, and teacher.
o The teacher will then make several DVD's with the pictures taken during the project and each taped performance. The students will be able to check out a DVD for their family and friends to enjoy as well.
o The students will then take their final draft and create an illustrated story. They will hand this in and the teacher will make it a book to share with the class.
o The teacher will also video tape them reading their book to their classmates.
o Several DVD's will be created of that presentation as well for students.
o The last part of the project will come when the students create a power point presentation demonstrating how they went about creating, performing, and finally publishing their modernized fairy tales.
o In the how to power point they will use video clips and pictures from their performances and also video tape an explanation for each power point slide.
o In the end the students will have learned about narrative writing, communication, dialoging, oral presenting, descriptive writing, expository writing, and various other language arts skills.
